“There is no education that is just for earning a living; it is also for living a life”
W.E.B. Dubois (1973, p. 84).
On Saturday, September 28 our grade 12 youth fellows enjoyed a trip to downtown Toronto to visit the Ontario Universities Fair and check out post secondary education options.
Why is Post Secondary Education (PSE) such an important goal of the NOISE project? Because we know that three-quarters of new jobs will require college or university education. It is therefore not surprising that study after study has shown that young people who have PSE fare better in the labor market.
As important as it is to make sure that our young people are well prepared for future jobs, PSE is not only important because of jobs. As W.E.B. Dubois emphasized decades ago, “There is no education that is just for earning a living; it is also for living a life”. Indeed, research has shown that PSE increases well-being, civic participation and social inclusion.
Our youth fellows also had a chance to see a bit of downtown Toronto and enjoy a good lunch. Who says that you can’t mix learning and fun!
A big thank you to our Seneca @ York Social Service Interns who organized the trip and accompanied the youth to the fair.
