Does running a city with neoliberal ideology work?

In the city of Toronto we have a mayor who is running the city based on a neoliberal ideology. Mayor Rob Ford believes that private enterprise will do a better job providing services to the people than government can, and thus he is on a mission to privatize or sell off government agencies. Neoliberalism is a market-driven approach to economic and social policy based on neoclassical theories of economics that stress the efficiency of private enterprise, liberalized trade and relatively open markets, and therefore seek to maximize the role of the private sector in determining the political and economic priorities of the country. Neoliberalism seeks to transfer control of the economy from public to the private sector, under the belief that it will produce a more efficient government and improve the economic health of the nation. The theory of neoliberalism sounds good as an ideology but the question is does it work in reality? I would argue that it does not. Today we are witnessing the consequence of years of governing countries based on neoliberal ideology, especially in the United States. Banks for years were not regulated with the belief that with a free market system the banks would regulate and govern themselves, but now we know that was not the case. Mayor Rob Ford needs to understand that you can not govern a city like Toronto based on a neoliberal ideology. The only way to govern is through common sense and by understanding and responding to the needs of the people who have elected you. I believe that it is a mistake to think that one can govern a city with the belief that privatizing is always the solution, because often times it is not.
